Winter Is Coming

“You lose more heat through your head than any other body part.”  Do you remember your mother yelling, “Don’t forget your hat”?  No, that was not an urban legend; your mother was right.

A few thought on how to dress for the cold weather. From Herbalskincareblog.com

Dress warm for the cold weather
Fffrreezing!!

I grew up in Russia.  There are many differences, culturally and socially, between Americans and Russians.  Over time we have adapted, we understand and have come to accept many things that used to make us different.  But I refuse to accept some of the “ways of life” and accepted customs that make no sense to me…one of which is the strange way Americans dress during the cold season.

I have my own view on how to dress properly during winter. Since I was a kid, I knew to put on my hat before I ran outside to play in the snow; also warm boots.  I may not have worn a coat, but a warm hat was a must.

It was the same in the army.  In winter morning exercises were outside in our undershirts…but the hats were on.

Dressing in cold weather
The hat will ruin my hair!

I watch people on the streets during the blistering cold walking without hats and I can see that they are cold, freezing, miserable.  But no hats!  And I guarantee that, if they would put their hats on, they would feel much better!  And that simple act of sanity would prevent a lot of colds.

Some say that it is a myth that we are losing most of the heat from our head and we are losing heat equally from any other part of the body as well. And yet for some reason I do not see people going barefoot or bare-chested in winter.

Here is the wisdom of generations:  Always wear a hat!  And warm shoes if it is cold out.

You lose more heat through your head than any other body part.”  Do you remember your mother yelling, “Don’t forget your hat”?  No, that was not an urban legend; your mother was right. http://talkingtothefish.wordpress.com/page/9/

And if it contradicts the accepted view of highly educated professionals so be it. The arrogance of the “know it all” medical establishment is staggering. And if you disagree, why don’t you read up on some statistics. http://www.sweetliberty.org/issues/health/cause.htm Wrong diagnosis, wrong treatment, inability to diagnose. “According an extremely comprehensive and well-documented report (30 pages, including about 160 documented references with three MD’s & 2 PhD researchers as authors) March, 2004 Life Extension Magazine, Conventional Medicine is Now the #1 Cause of Death, followed by heart disease & cancer.”  (stroke must be #4 now?)

And now “new breakthroughs” in medical science stating something people knew for generations:  that garlic is good for you; that a mustard compress treats a cold.  A lot of research is being done on “cupping treatment”:  http://www.pacificcollege.edu/acupuncture-massage-news/om-essay-contest/om-essay-contest/1084-the-magic-of-cupping-therapy-by-serra-reid-lac-diplom-.html  And the highly scientific result is that cupping may be beneficial.

Need to cover your head in winter
How about between your ears?

I do not state that all the advice our parents and grandparents gave us is totally correct or can be proved by science.  But these various advices have been proven by generations of trial and error, by millions and millions of people – adults and children.  Mayo clinic calls it “evidence-based”.

But if you do catch a cold here are some natural cold remedies: http://www.happy-mothering.com/03/health-2/wellness/10-natural-home-remedies-for-colds/ , http://www.biomedcentral.com/1472-6882/10/70

And please be careful with antibiotics.  As we are finding out even the mighty antibiotics can be fatal if over relied upon. http://www.mayoclinic.org/antibiotics/ART-20045720

Now if you want to prove me wrong, by all means please take a walk in the snow in your bathing suit.  Please do it for science.

I personally will keep my hat on and will put on my warm boots to enjoy winter. Now if all you care about are your ears, then wear ear muffs.  You ears will be fine.  Your brain is another matter. So my friends, please enjoy winter and don’t forget the hat.

Obamacare Website…Or How Not To Build A Website.

The obvious question about the disastrous debut of the Healthcare.Gov website is who are the assholes that designed the site? Considering how important this website is for the President and all his supporters, and knowing that the developers involved in the project had years and resources to do it right, were these “experts” hired to do the project based on qualifications or political connections and bribes? And WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MESS?

At least 55 major contractors were involved in creating, managing or supporting HealthCare.gov, the new consumer database of insurance plans created under the health reform law, but their public comments since it went live on October 1 are eerily similar, boiling down to either “Not our fault,” or “No comment.”

In fact, it is quite likely that no individual is to blame, which is a dubious benefit of this kind of crowd-sourcing.  The Wall Street Journal identifies the problem as a bottleneck in the registration process where a number of programs developed by different companies collide.

What an enlightening idea – instead of wasting money at McDonald’s – skip the food! That will save you money on food and insurance premiums! Your auto insurance premium depends on your driving habits and driving history. Your home insurance premium depends on where your house is located. Any insurance premium is a calculated risk. And health insurance is no exception. So stop whining and sign up for the gym.

Employees’ unhealthy habits have a growing effect on their insurance premiums.

Healthy life style and weight
Sick America

In an effort to rein in soaring medical-insurance costs — now estimated at more than $12,000 per employee — big companies are increasingly turning from incentives to penalties to change their workers’ unhealthy habits.

The most recent example is CVS Caremark, which has ignited controversy by requiring its 200,000 employees across Florida and the nation to undergo screenings to record their weight, body fat, blood glucose and blood pressure levels. If they don’t do so by May 1, they’ll have to pay an extra $600 for health insurance in the coming year.

The shift is drawing fire from patients’ rights groups, which consider the policies coercive and a violation of privacy. At Michelin North America, the tire manufacturer, workers with thick waistlines — 40 inches and over for men, 35 and over for women — will have to pay up to $1,000 more a year in health insurance premiums than their leaner coworkers. http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2013-04-12/news/os-employee-health-insurance-20130412_1_cvs-caremark-insurance-premiums-health-insurance

My take on it: The only way to get healthcare costs under control is taking personal responsibility for our health.  No doctor will do it for us.  And the only way to get people to change their lives is by monetary encouragement.  Many can find a bunch of great reasons why they cannot help it…but money talks.

I also would suggest that medicaid patients pay a certain amount for every visit to a doctor.  I see every day that people on medicaid run to a doctor without much reason and with no results.

But Dr. Michael Siegel, a professor at Boston University School of Public Health, sees policies such as CVS’ as “a slippery slope”.

“What are people going to be penalized for next?” Siegel said.  “Will they ask how many times you go out for fast food each week?  Are they going to ask how much people drink?  Are they going to ask about sexual behavior?  What if an employee is having unsafe sex?  It opens the door to asking people all kinds of personal questions that have nothing to do with how well you do your job.” http://www.columbian.com/news/2013/apr/22/employees-unhealthful-habits-affect-insurance.

Obesity is not just a private matter.
Your choice; your responsibility.

Personally I don’t care if you eat at McDonald’s every hour! Just don’t blame the system and don’t ask me to pay for your stupidity! The bottom line in my opinion…people should be responsible for their own actions or inaction.  I personally do not want to pay extra for my insurance premium because my coworker is fat and lazy and drinks and smokes.  In this country we the people should bare the consequences.

“We are free to choose our paths, but we can’t choose the consequences that come with them.” ―Sean Covey, The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens

You want to smoke and eat ice cream every day – fine.  It is your life.  Just don’t ask society to pay the consequences of your stupidity. Only bankers can do this!

So yes.  On this rare occasion I support corporations that force people to take care of their health, regardless of the reasons that motivate corporations to do so.

Do not blame others for your issues.
Just look in the mirror!

Here is another money-saving idea: “Fasting – where little or no food is eaten a few days a week, can be as beneficial as exercise or surgery if you have heart disease.  It improves blood pressure while releasing a protein that naturally protects the heart, and recent research suggests it may even reverse type 2 diabetes. All the benefits of fasting have been evaluated by scientists at Aston University, and they have come away with a long list that is topped by improvements to heart health, reversal of diabetes and reduction in inflammation.

Intermittent fasting – where food is not eaten on alternate days or several days a week, is also a very effective way of losing weight, says lead researcher James Brown.” http://www.wddty.com/fasting-improves-heart-health-and-may-even-reverse-diabetes.html

U.S. Lags Peers in Life Expectancy

“Americans die younger and have more illnesses and accidents on average than people in other high-income countries—even wealthier, insured, college-educated Americans, a report said Wednesday.
The study by the federally sponsored National Research Council and Institute of Medicine found the U.S. near the bottom of 17 affluent countries for life expectancy, with high rates of obesity and diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease and arthritis, as well as infant mortality, injuries, homicides, teen pregnancy, drug deaths and sexually transmitted diseases.
“The [U.S.] health disadvantage is pervasive it affects all age groups up to age 75 and is observed for multiple diseases, biological and behavioral risk factors, and injuries,” said the report’s authors, who are public-health and medicine academics recruited by the government panels.”

We real patriots believe that this black Kenian Muslim President of ours will  makes us sick in order to make us accept Obamacare.  His wants to become a socialist Marxist dictator for life and he will take our freedom and our guns.

Exceptional American
Our Hero

Those guns are are last defense… we need more guns to defend ourselves from those terrorist Muslim bacteria and viruses. We need to defend our freedom from all this doctors who want to force their way of “healthy” living on us. This “healthy” stuff is for liberals, not for real Americans.

We are more exceptional and fatter than any other nation,  and if you disagree, we have guns to prove it.

Larry the cable guy, Joe the plumber and Rambo are our heroes. And these liberal professors and scientists can kiss our exceptionally fat asses.

Surprise!

Supreme Court upholds Obamacare. The Democrats are shocked! They the Democrats are not used to it. Victories, I mean. The Democrats were preparing themselves for defeat (that is what they do).

Oh no! We won!

Supreme court upholds Obamacare. The Democrats are shocked! They the Democrats are not used to it. Victories, I mean. The Democrats were preparing themselves for defeat (that is what they do). It was so close! First there was a short bittersweet moment when “Fix” News and CNN announced defeat of the insurance mandate. And the Democrats were ready to fight for the next defeat (that’s what they do). And then after the “Fix” News and CNN photo finish, somebody behind them had an idea to read some more pages of the decision  and the truth hit hard – Democrats won. Holy crap! Now what? How do we agree on the compromise with Republicans if we won? Will the Republicans agree on the compromise or will they demand the surrender? But how do we surrender after we won? Democrats wondered.

And I would like to reassure my fellow Democrats. You will find the way. You always do.
