Are we a country whose democracy is active, or are we at a point where our democracy is approaching a state of inaction?

Colonial Creation – The Middle East Mess.

Middle East conflicts

Just chop them up and clamp together.

How our actions destroyed the Arab world.

In the post-colonialism era the former Ottoman Empire was sliced up and countries were created.  Arbitrary.  So Shiites got hoarded together with Sunnis.

The differences between Iraqis, Syrians, Jordanians, etc. were entirely created by the European colonizers as a method of dividing the Arabs against each other.”

The political mess that Britain created in the aftermath of WWI remains today.  The competing agreements and the subsequent countries that were created to disunite Muslims from each other led to political instability throughout the Middle East...the disunity of the Muslims in that region has led to corrupt governments and economic decline for the Middle East as a whole.  The divisions that the British instituted in the Muslim world remain strong today, despite being wholly created within the past 100 years.”

"Some 11,000,000 Muslims have been violently killed since 1948, of which 35,000, or 0.3 percent, died during the sixty years of fighting Israel, or just 1 out of every 315 Muslim fatalities.  In contrast, over 90 percent of the 11 million who perished were killed by fellow Muslims.”

Muslim against muslim violence

Killing each other.

Arab-Israeli Fatalities Rank 49th.
If the sectarian fires grow, the first victims could be Lebanon and Iraq, with their unhappy history of Shiite-Sunni violence; the international community has barely managed to contain this in wars past.  The upheavals in the Balkans in the 1990s -- a violent fissure between Orthodox Christians and Muslims that eventually involved most of former Yugoslavia -- provide a taste of what might be in store for the Middle East.  Only concerted and forceful U.S. action averted a broader regional war in Europe in the '90s, and the Middle East is an even tougher neighborhood.”
The "To Hell with Them" Doctrine, Jonah Goldberg, Aug 16, 2013.

You can’t prove a negative, but my hunch is that support for Israel or South Korea, never mind our NATO allies, remains quite strong.  If real friends were threatened, the American people would support coming to their aid.  It’s just that there’s a growing -- or, in many cases, a deepening -- sense that we don’t have real friends in the Muslim world.

Rulers of the Middle East

Oil wealth is not forever.

So what do we do now?  In Europe the nations that were clumped together regardless of national identity fell apart.  Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, the  Soviet Union, Pakistan, Bangladesh are some examples.  So in my opinion trying to force “democracy” in the Middle Eastern “countries” is laughable. The longer well-meaning idiots try to keep these artificial states together, the harder they will fall.  And the Middle East is not Europe where, after bombings, Yugoslavia fell apart and people live in relative peace.  In the Middle East that actually is still in the 7th century no matter who you bomb... everybody hates Westerners.  This hate is the only common denominator for all warring factions.

So, as crazy as it sounds, the only thing that can be done is to quarantine the whole region, cut arms supplies to all sides and just keep an eye on everybody.

And let all in the region know in no uncertain terms that we will protect our friends in the region at all costs.

Considering that Europe and the US are becoming less dependent on Middle Eastern oil, the current turmoil is just the beginning.  Without oil money the regimes supported by Westerners will fall and the flames of hatred and insanity will burn even brighter.  Regardless of western guilt in the matter, the fire will extinguish itself after millions will die.  And there is not much we can do.  We tried, Unfortunately.
