“First They Came for the Jews”
By Pastor Niemoller
First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me.
SARCELLES, France — From the immigrant enclaves of the Parisian suburbs to the drizzly bureaucratic city of Brussels to the industrial heartland of Germany, Europe’s old demon returned this summer. “Death to the Jews!” shouted protesters at pro-Palestinian rallies in Belgium and France. “Gas the Jews!” yelled marchers at a similar protest in Germany. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/24/world/europe/europes-anti-semitism-comes-out-of-shadows.html?_r=0
Gunmen have shot dead 12 people at the Paris office of a French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo, in an apparent militant Islamist attack.
Four of the magazine’s well-known cartoonists, including its editor, were among those killed, as well as two police officers. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30710883
The writing is on the wall. The world is sick again. And the first and usual symptom is the rise of antisemitism. But Europe learned nothing from the events before and during WWII. Nothing.
Attacks on Jews and Jewish houses of worship as well as Jewish businesses are becoming commonplace in European countries, especially in France. But who cares! These are Jews. Nobody cares about Jews! The Europeans never liked Jews. They did not move a finger to help Jews before and during the war.
And what is fascinating is the Jews never, never posed any threats to anybody. And yet they, the Jews, are always a scapegoat, always the first to suffer the growing hate.
But what the Europeans never learned is that the evil never stopped with Jews. It is feeding on the hatred and indifference of others, growing and getting stronger. And when Evil gets strong enough it goes further. It strikes another victim and while the silent majority is preoccupied with the daily grind, the evil gets stronger, bolder. And it strikes again.
Europe learned nothing. But Jews did. We will not be helpless victims anymore. And if the Europeans will not come to their senses, they will be the next victim.
And their antisemitism will not appease the Evil.
