Global Report: Obesity Bigger Health Crisis than Hunger

Humans are doomed for extinction. One half will die from hunger while the other half will die from overeating. So which is a better way to die?

An international conference is scheduled where the hungry and obese will work to find the solution to this rift in humans.

Eat hay!
Eat hay!

Can we talk?
Can we talk?

(CNN)— “Obesity is a bigger health crisis globally than hunger, and the leading cause of disabilities around the world, according to a new report published Thursday in the British medical journal The Lancet.” http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/13/health/global-burden-report

Humans are doomed for extinction.  One half will die from hunger while the other half will die from overeating.  So which is a better way to die? A global forum is scheduled at which representatives of the starving half will join those from the  obese half in an attempt to find a reasonable solution to this civilization threatening problem.  Note:  an alien civilization asked to participate as well.  The reason:  they have been trying to understand human behavior and failed.  So they are desperately trying to determine just what is wrong with the human brain.

It is unfortunate that we horses were not invited.  Since horses don’t have this problem, we might suggest that both camps eat hay.  Why not?  The hungry are doing it already and if they satiate their unending hunger by drinking copious amounts of water while enjoying hay, the fat might lose some weight.

If this problem is not solved soon, might the hungry start to eat the fat?  We horses will just try to stay out of the way and observe.

What Has Become of Us?

In a war zone, all soldiers know that they have their team, their commanders, their country behind them. That knowledge makes our military strong. One for all and all for one. Why doesn’t this common sense behavior apply to the rest of us? Who is watching our backs?

We are afraid to be human
Fear poisons.

An old woman passes out in the assisted living home and the nurse refuses to help, refuses even to ask somebody around to help. The woman dies.

“The 911 tape makes for  horrifying listening.  Over the course of seven long minutes, as Bayless’ life trickled away, Tracey Halvorson, the 911 operator, repeatedly begged the nurse to help Bayless, while the nurse, just as repeatedly, refused to move a muscle:

“It’s a human being.  Is there anybody that’s willing to help this lady and not let her die?”

[Silence]

“Um, not at this time.” http://www.mrconservative.com/2013/03/5742-regulation-kills-for-fear-of-liability-nurse-refuses-to-give-cpr-to-nursing-home-patient-now-dead/

Somebody leaves the wounded person near a hospital entrance, but there is no help for that person. Medical personnel refuse to touch the person.

A Presidential candidate accuses 47% of Americans of being free-loaders.

Over 50% of bankruptcies in America are caused by medical expenses.

15 million American kids go hungry every day.

Health and liability
Decision making

We cut money for education, school lunches and other programs for our children.

What is common in all of the above?

We are refusing to help each other, we are refusing to follow our natural instincts, our compassion, our desire to help. Why?

There is a reason for the human instinct to help each other, to support each other. It is called  survival of the species.

So, why don’t we do what is natural for us humans? Why are we refusing to help each other? Why do we go against our instincts?

America is a country with more people who call themselves religious than any other developed country.

Doesn’t religion teach us to help thy neighbor?  What is wrong with us?  What has become of us?

In a war zone, all soldiers know that they have their team, their commanders, their country behind them.  That knowledge makes our military strong.  One for all and all for one.  Why doesn’t this common sense behavior apply to the rest of us? Who is watching our backs?

Society
We are all in this together

There is a fear that if you fall on hard times, you are on your own.  But aren’t we all a team?  We are an army, too.  We are building the future of this country.  We are a nation, even if we do not wear a uniform.  We built this country, its roads and bridges, cities and farms, tanks and airplanes.  We are scientists and teachers, police and firefighters.  We take care of each other.

Are we doing it?

Why is this not true anymore?  Why do we allow fear to take over?  Fear robs us of our humanity. Fear pushes us to buy weapons; fear makes us suspicious, it makes killers out of us.  What has become of us?  Why are we afraid?

Every one of us who helped somebody – their neighbor or just a stranger – knows the feeling.  It feels good and right to help. This great feeling is who we are.  It is natural to help others, it is natural to love thy neighbor, it is natural to save a life. And that is what makes us human.  We are made this way.

So, what happened to us?

We are a country of laws.  Laws help us to function as a society.  Laws govern everything in our country.  We are obligated to follow the law, and we get punished for breaking the law.  But lately, some laws got a life of their own, and began to work against people.  The law became oppressive, it became dehumanized, and so are many people who interpret the law.  These people are called lawyers.

Lawyers are not bad people.  But the system we created became bloated.

Supreme Court
High priests

Courts and lawyers do not realize sometimes that behind this strange lawyer-world and language are real people.  These people are the reason the court system was created.  The law should help us; it should not be a straightjacket for our society.

The Supreme Court should not be a gathering of high priests in an ivory tower.

Any society, in order to survive, must be humane.

We the people do not understand why we are not allowed to help somebody in trouble.

We the people do not understand why “corporations are people”.

We the people want to elect our leaders to represent us.  We don’t want to buy them.

We want our leaders to work for us, not for corporations.

We people are designed this way
Compassion is human

Have we lost our way?

Our society is becoming anti-human, anti-people.  Some of our laws are working against us.

My fellow Americans, you are kind and compassionate people.  Anybody can see that, especially at a time of crisis when you rush to help without concern for your own safety.

So, please do not allow the judicial system to run your life.  We live in a free country, in a democracy.  Please get involved, get informed, follow current events, vote, defend your natural desire to be yourself – to be human.

A Giant Ponzi Scheme

Why is it that in order to make a living, you must waste fuel idling in traffic? Why do we waste precious resources producing things totally unnecessary and sometimes harmful to our own health. Is there a rational reason why our economy produces and distributes junk food? Instead of producing healthy food, we use our scarce, depleted land, and draw mega-gallons of the water rom our ever-shrinking aquifer.to make junk food. Why must we squander our land, water, and energy to produce and consume useless crap.

Western economic model.
It’s a living

We go about our daily routine. We get up; go to work and complain about traffic. Sometimes, we like our jobs, sometimes we hate them. We sit in traffic coming home.  Not that we like it, but many of us are comfortably miserable with this daily grind.  Of course,  we complain, but do we have a choice? Got to make a living!  It’s a job.  We have dinner – if we have time, it’ll be homemade, but often it’s precooked, frozen and microwavable. Then a little TV,  followed by some restless sleep.  Morning: and the routine repeats itself  – day after day.  People are creatures of habit. We accept it and get used to it.

We don’t think much about how what we do affects our world. We  just live as everybody lives. It’s always been like that, and always will be.  Right?

We watch the news.  At last, the economy is recovering,  more jobs are available and unemployment is decreasing.  Hooray, we can afford to buy more stuff.

Some of us watch the History Channel – Mystery of the Lost Civilizations . Cool stuff!  Of course,  it could never  happen to us. We are smarter and know a lot more than these ancient civilizations. We are here to stay

Yes, finally, we can afford it; it’s time to go shopping. We are surrounded by wondrous shopping malls, and more are being built all the time. Life is good.

Rarely do we think where the stuff comes from or what becomes of all that garbage we take out every day. It’s simple: the truck comes and takes it away.

Apparently we have the mentality of a Thanksgiving Turkey!

Consumption may be a two way street
Consumption may be a two way street

Dead end!

Ignoring the environment
Jobs at any cost?

Researchers at one of the world’s leading think tanks have developed a computer model that predicts serious implications for our way of life as a result of our incessant need to consume resources like oil, food, and fresh water. According to a team of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the breaking point will come no later than 2030, and when it does, we can expect a paradigm shift unlike any we have seen before in human history – one that will not only collapse the economies of the world, but will cause food and energy production to decrease so significantly that it will lead to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people in the process.” A renowned Australian research scientist says a study from researchers at MIT claiming the world could suffer from a “global economic collapse” and “precipitous population decline” if people continue to consume the world’s resources at the current pace is still on track, nearly 40 years after it was first producedhttp://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/next-great-depression-mit-researchers-predict-global-economic-190352944.html

A giant Ponzi scheme.

GENEVA (Reuters) – The global jobless queue will stretch to more than 200 million people this year, the International Labour Organization said in its annual report on Tuesday, repeating a warning it has made at the start of each of the last six years. http://news.yahoo.com/global-jobless-hit-record-200-million-ilo-230617257–business.html

Wasting the planet
Making a living?

Question: What do we need to live and be happy?  Answer:  We need food, water, a place to live,  fellow human beings, family, friends and a livable climate.  Additionally in order to have fulfilled lives, we need to do something that we love, whether it be growing a garden, reading a book, appreciating a painting or traveling the world.  Doing keeps us alive.

Our society, our way of life, our economic model are all in trouble. A portion the world’s population is experiencing food and water shortages. We are dependent upon non-renewable energy sources.  Human population grows , resources decline, and now climate change is upon us.

Why is it that in order to make a living, you must waste fuel idling  in traffic?  Why do we waste precious resources producing things totally unnecessary and sometimes harmful to our own health.   Is there a rational reason why our economy produces and distributes junk food? Instead of producing healthy food, we use our scarce, depleted land, and draw mega-gallons of the water  from our ever-shrinking aquifer.to make junk food. Why must we squander our land, water, and energy to produce and consume useless crap.

We are busy, so busy that there is little time to enjoy our family and  friends. Is the really the way to go? Do you really need all this stuff?  How can this be?  Why do we need to make and consume more and more in order to “make a living”?

The answer is simple : Our Western economic model is a Ponzi scheme, a pyramid scheme.

Scorched Earth economy
Coal mining in Appalachia.

Ponzi scheme: A fraudulent moneymaking scheme in which people are recruited to make payments to others above them in a hierarchy while expecting to receive payments from people recruited below them. Eventually the number of new recruits fails to sustain the payment structure, and the scheme collapses with most people losing the money they paid in.” http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Ponzi+scheme

The  Western World’s Ponzi economy: in order to sustain itself for itself, it must have consumers with insatiable appetites, and  those appetites must be continually stimulated by producing more goods. Thus using more limited resources. Of course, the scheme must and will collapse when resources are not available. No resources equals no goods which equals no consumers and thus no economy … game over! Countries around the world are rushing to adopt and implement this Western economic model. They are happily joining the crowd running toward the cliff.

Farmland is shrinking
Food crisis

Food and land shortages are growing. Arable land and food production are intrinsically locked together. Land suitable for food production is declining every year. The implications of a food crisis are closely linked to another issue that has the potential to further threaten global food security.  Building more factories and cities turns potential life giving crop land into concrete.  That concrete may result in stronger GDP numbers, but the urbanization, rising disposable income and population growth contributes to rising demand for food. “Up to 30 million hectares of farmland are lost annually due to environmental degradation, conversion to industrial use or urbanization,”notes Olivier De Schutter, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food in a report. China is one of the best examples of this. The country’s population is set to level out slightly by the middle of the century, but its accelerating economic expansion is increasingly destabilizing the food balance.” http://www.sott.net/article/255795-Why-Chinas-explosive-economic-growth-could-trigger-a-global-food-crisis

An infinitely growing economy is dependent on an infinitely growing population, a population that is already placing inordinate burdens on the finite resources of a finite planet. Unrestrained growth, like any cancer, will kill us, and it could happen quicker than we think. It’s time we seriously think about these problems, and seek solutions.  We are heading towards catastrophe, an inevitable catastrophe, unless we humans recognize the problem and change our waysOur future is ours to build or to destroy.

Yoga
See? Just like Muslim Terrorists!

I totally agree. What we really need is prayer. Prayer in schools will protect our children from Hindu indoctrination by sneaky manipulation of our kids with yoga practice. If we don’t nip it in the bud these Hindu Yoga sympathizers will install the Hindu Sharia law in America.

The danger of growing ignorance in America
Ignorance

“The entirety of democracy in the United States is based upon a principle that has become increasingly flawed: the concept of “the wisdom of the masses.” According to Cornell University psychologist David Dunning, Americans are so ignorant that they are not even aware of their own ignorance, and are also unable to determine the ignorance of elected officials. If we do not address this problem soon, the ignorance of our countrymen will become our greatest threat to national security.”

“….the growth of ignorance is becoming more and more important with each successive year. Americans are laughably ignorant of the world outside of our own personal bubbles, and eventually that lack of knowledge will lead to our downfall.” http://cornellinsider.com/2012/11/04/the-perils-of-the-ignorant-american/

Life is an adventure

Thankfully the future is unknown.

An adventure.

Don’t we love the adventure?

But I sense fear.

Fear envelopes our country.

Fear of the future.

Fear of the unknown

Happy New Year
Fear of the unknown

A poisonous fog of fear is creeping up in the soul of America.

A self fulfilling prophecy.

And life is not an adventure anymore

Just a nostalgic longing for “good old times”

But one cannot reverse the flow if time.

The future scares some.

Yet some welcome the future and are exited by an adventure life brings.

And life welcomes those who welcomes life’s unpredictability.

We make choices.
Tree of life

Those who know that the future is what we make of it

Dear friends.

Happy New Year!

There will be bumps on the road

And turns and twists.

So hold on and enjoy the ride!

Just don’t miss your turn.

Hate and Ignorance will not Prevail

Pretty soon the religious right might legalize rape especially if the child would be white. And have you seen the “Let’s Put the White Back in the White House” t-shirts and bumper stickers? How about some of the bumper stickers below? Does anyone really want to be voting on the same side as the bigots, racists, fascists, and KKK in the country? Why does our election process have to degenerate to such racist and hateful comments?

As we approach Nov. 6 I think it’s time to reflect, and look at some of our leaders and pundits on the air waves today.

First, consider Rush Limbaugh’s vile attack on Sandra Fluke, a student at Georgetown University and former head of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice. Then Todd Akin trying to “legalize rape” and make a distinction based on how violent a rape could be–“forcible rape”. He even proposed legislation, co-sponsored by Paul Ryan, the Republican VP candidate, with regard to forcible rape. Could someone please tell me how rape is not forcible and exactly what is a legal rape?

There are plenty more atrocities in the past, but let’s just focus on a couple of the most recent insanities–by Ann Coulter (political pundit) and Richard Murdock (Tea Party candidate for Senate in Indiana).

Coulter said she supported Mitt Romney’s strategy to not attack President Barack Obama. Or, as Coulter put it on Twitter, “I highly approve of Romney’s decision to be kind and gentle to the retard.” Please consider the following response from someone far more intelligent than Miss Coulter: Open Letter to Ann Coulter.

And take a look at this from Richard Mourdock:

Fallout Continues from Richard Mourdock’s “Gift from God” Rape Comment.

Pretty soon the religious right may legalize rape.

And have you seen the “Let’s Put the White Back in the White House” t-shirts and bumper stickers? How about some of the bumper stickers below? Does anyone really want to be voting on the same side as the bigots, racists, fascists, and KKK?

Why does our election process have to degenerate to such racist and hateful comments?

Obama haters rampage
Is this America the Beautiful?

If you’ve reached this point in the article please comment on how you feel about the above hateful and sometimes racist comments. Is this what we want in America? Is this what our election process has come to? This is certainly not what I want to see. Yes, it is definitely time to stop and reflect.

The pain and the shame of America

The most powerful country in the world does not have the power to help its citizens–to help kids to live.

America we don’t see

The most powerful country in the world does not have the power to help its citizens–to help kids to live.

We as a country are undercutting our future.

Today’s complex society only can survive and flourish as a society, as one super organism–where every part of the society is needed to keep the structure sound.

Otherwise the structure will collapse.

The most crucial, the most important component keeping today’s society together is knowledge.

We need people to carry and expand the knowledge.

America’s power is not military. Our greatest power is our people.

Our power is our democracy–a democracy that attracts the best and the brightest from around the world.

Our power is equal opportunity for all to succeed.

It is not the fear of America’s military that makes us the envy of the world.

Our future
It is not her fault.

It is the dream of the people around the world about building a better life for themselves and their children.

It is the dream about a happier future that makes us proud, that makes us Americans.

Every single one of us, every American, should be ashamed that our kids don’t have a home.

Our future is in jeopardy when American kids go hungry.

It is our shame, it is our pain, America.

Balancing the Budget on the Backs of the Poor and Our Children

There have been recent proposals to cut funding for Head Start as part of an overall federal spending reduction. What ever happened to the concept of “Leave No Child Behind”? Did we really mean “Leave No Rich Child Behind”?

There have been recent proposals to cut funding for Head Start as part of an overall federal spending reduction. What ever happened to the concept of “Leave No Child Behind”? Did we really mean “Leave No Rich Child Behind”?

Where are our priorities? We can give billions of dollars in tax cuts to the richest in the country and spend hundreds of billions of dollars trying to democratize the world, yet we cannot afford a few million dollars to help the poor in this country – not even to help their children get off to a good start with their education. We’ll lock’em up for 20 years if they get caught shop lifting a few times, but not a dime more for education and the possibility of a better life.

Most people understand that Head Start is a great program, but for those unfamiliar with the program the Macgraw-Hill dictionary has the following definition.

Compensatory education designed to provide children from low income families the opportunity to acquire the skills and experiences important for school success.”
